Mental Attitude: Family Meals Means Better Behaved Kids.
In a new study, researchers monitored children from five months to ten years of age and found that kids had higher fitness levels, drank fewer soft drinks, and had better social skills if they regularly ate meals with their family. Study author Dr. Linda Pagani explains, “Our findings suggest that family meals are not solely markers of home environment quality, but are also easy targets for parent education about improving children’s well-being.”

Health Alert: ADHD Medication Pregnancy Carries Heart Risks for Baby.
Taking methylphenidate for attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) disorder during pregnancy may increase the risk of having a baby with a heart defect. An analysis of data on over four million pregnancies found that taking methylphenidate in the first trimester increased the child’s risk for a heart defect by 28%. This means that for every 1,000 women who take these medications during their pregnancy, there would be three additional infants born with congenital heart defects. Study author Dr. Krista Huybrechts explains, “Our study markedly expands the evidence base regarding the safety of methylphenidate use in pregnancy… Although the absolute risk is small, it is nevertheless important evidence to consider when treating young women of reproductive age and pregnant women.”
