Mental Attitude: Working During Off Hours May Hurt Wellbeing.
Do you answer work-related phone calls or emails on the weekends? Doing so may put your well-being at risk. A new survey of 1,916 employees in German-speaking countries revealed that those who did not draw the line between work and their family lives were less likely to participate in hobbies and other activities that can help them to recover from the mental and physical demands of their vocation. Furthermore, those who allowed their work to encroach into their personal lives felt more emotionally exhausted and had a lower sense of wellbeing. Based on the findings, study co-author Dr. Ariane Wepfer writes, “Organizational policy and culture should be adjusted to help employees manage their work-non-work boundaries in a way that does not impair their well-being… After all, impaired well-being goes hand in hand with reduced productivity and reduced creativity.”
Journal of Business and Psychology, December 2017Health Alert: Life Expectancy Drops While Opioid-Related Deaths Surge.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average life expectancy in 2016 in the United States (US) fell by one-tenth of a year in 2015 to 78.6 years. Meanwhile, drug overdose deaths increased by 21% last year in the US and appear to be the main cause for the decline in life expectancy. Lindsey Vuolo, associate director of health law and policy with the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, notes the decrease in life expectancy is “really alarming, and really demonstrates the size and severity of the opioid epidemic and our national addiction problem.”

Diet: Healthy Eating Equals Happy Kids.
A review of data concerning 7,675 children from eight European countries revealed that limiting intake of refined sugars, reducing fat intake, and eating more fruit and vegetables may result in better self-esteem and fewer emotional and peer problems.

Exercise: Children Who Exercise at Their Own Pace Have Improved Attention and Memory.
In this study, more than 11,000 students completed a series of tests regarding attention and memory after engaging in physical activity of varying intensities. Co-researcher Dr. Josie Booth writes, “Ultimately, we found that 15 minutes of self-paced exercise can significantly improve a child’s mood, attention, and memory—enhancing their ability to learn… This suggests that children should be encouraged to exercise at their own pace during short breaks from class. This may help children be more ready to learn when they return to the classroom.”

Chiropractic: Back Pain Affects Teens Quality of Life.
Researchers evaluated data concerning 350 early adolescents and found that a third (34.3%) had lower back pain, one-in-four (27.1%) complained of neck pain, and 13.1% experienced mid-back pain. Additionally, 21.7% of the students had pain in multiple body sites. Further analysis revealed that teens with more frequent and/or more intense pain experienced a lower quality of life, as did those with pain in more than one anatomical location. The findings are concerning to researchers, as musculoskeletal pain in adolescence usually continues into adulthood.

Wellness/Prevention: Take Care of Your Feet.
If you spend a lot of time on your feet, it’s extra important to care of them. To aid in proper foot care, the American Podiatric Medical Association recommends the following: moisturize your feet daily to prevent dry, cracked, and irritated skin; raise, point, and curl your toes during the day; get a foot rub to release tension, boost circulation, and refresh your skin; elevate your legs daily; and make sure to wear comfortable, proper fitting shoes.
