“Don’t be encumbered by history,  just go out and do something wonderful.” ~ Robert Noyce

Mental Attitude: Childhood Trauma Linked to Heart Later in Life.
People abused or bullied during their youth or who witnessed violence or experienced other traumas while growing up appear to be at an elevated risk for heart disease in adulthood, possibly due to prolonged periods of increased stress.

Health Alert: Heartburn Linked to Higher Risk for Head and Neck Cancers.
A study involving nearly 28,000 Americans over the age of 65 found a link between a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease and nearly triple the risk of developing cancers of the larynx, about a 2.5 greater the risk of cancer of the pharynx, double the risk for cancer of the tonsils, and a 40% greater risk of cancer of the sinuses. Dr. David Hiltzik from Staten Island University Hospital in New York City writes, “We know clinically that acid reflux causes problems throughout life in these areas in the head and neck… This study reinforces the fact that we need to address these issues early and perhaps more aggressively. I believe patients should be more aware of how their daily diet and behavioral habits can have serious long-term effects.”
JAMA Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, December 2017

Diet: Eating Greens May Boost an Aging Brain.
Individuals who eat green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collard greens on a regular basis appear to maintain a sharper mind as they age. Investigators surveyed 960 adults, aged 58 to 99, about their diets and lifestyle and found that those who ate at least one serving of leafy greens per day fared as well on cognitive assessments as individuals eleven years their junior. Lead researcher Dr. Martha Clare Morris notes, “This doesn’t prove cause-and-effect… But you can’t really go wrong by adding leafy greens to your diet.”

Exercise: Short-Term Exercise Provides a Boost to the Brain.
Researchers at Western University, Canada have found that even a short, one-time burst of exercise benefits regions of the brain responsible for decision-making and focus. More specifically, investigators found that just ten minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise on a stationary bike led to a temporary improvement in executive function. The researchers believe the findings carry significance for older individuals in early stages of dementia or anyone looking to gain a quick mental edge.

Chiropractic: Conservative Care Benefits Common Shoulder Ailment.
Impingement of the shoulder is best described as the pinching of soft tissue in the shoulder as one lifts their arm. A recent literature search found that conservative treatment approaches yield satisfactory outcomes within two years in 60% of shoulder impingement cases. The review suggests that conservative treatments should be utilized for an extended period of time before consulting a surgeon. Conservative treatment options such as manipulation, mobilization, and exercise are commonly used by doctors of chiropractic for patients with shoulder pain complaints.

Wellness/Prevention: Staying Safe in the Parking Lot.
Each year more than 50,000 vehicle accidents take place in parking lots and garages in the United States, leading to nearly 500 deaths and over 60,000 injuries. To keep safe, the National Prevention & Wellness Safety Council offers these safety suggestions: don’t cut across the lot to get to a parking space; drive slowly, and use directional signals; anticipate the actions of other drivers; obey stop signs and no-parking signs; be mindful of other vehicles and pedestrians when backing up; and watch for small children and parents with baby strollers.
