Mental Attitude: Improve Your Self Confidence.
If you suffer from self-doubt or insecurity even though you are skilled and successful, then you may have “imposter syndrome.” To overcome this problem, the American Psychological Association recommends the following: if all evidence suggests you’re doing a great job at work, ignore any self-doubt; stop feeling guilty and celebrate your success; understand that many people feel this way; when you don’t feel confident, pretend you do; embrace your feelings and stay motivated; and keep learning and working hard.

Health Alert: Doctor’s Offices May Hold More Blame for the Opioid Epidemic Than the ER.
Opioid prescriptions skyrocketed 471% from 1996 to 2012. According to a new report, during this time period, 44% of prescriptions for opioids originated in a doctor’s office in an outpatient setting, 26% from dental offices and other outpatient sites, 16% from emergency departments, and 14% from inpatient hospital settings. Researcher Dr. Sarah Axeen writes, “One hypothesis has been that the emergency room is a recurrent site of care and that patients could be going from ER to ER to obtain multiple prescriptions to support their addiction… But our analysis shows that emergency rooms account for a very small share of all prescribed opioids. In fact, doctor’s offices are the source of many more of these drugs.”

Diet: Western Diet May Permanently Alter the Immune System.
A new animal study suggests that the immune system’s response to the Western diet is similar to how the immune system responds to infection. In the study, researchers fed mice a Western diet (high calorie, high fat, low fiber) and after just four weeks, the mice exhibited changes in their bodies similar to the strong inflammatory reactions that take place during a bacterial infection. The researchers suspect that the long-term exposure to this type of inflammatory response may contribute to an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and several other conditions that have been linked to the Western diet.

Exercise: Overtraining May Impair Gut Bacteria.
When an individual trains too hard for too long, their body cannot recover in time for the next session, which can result in reduced strength and even an increased risk of injury. Now a new study involving mice suggests that overtraining can also affect the bacteria in the gut that help keep you healthy. In the study, researchers observed that overtraining for one month caused the gut bacteria population in mice to become less diverse. Previous studies have noted a relationship between reduced gut bacteria diversity and insulin resistance, high blood cholesterol, inflammation, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, asthma, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome, to name a few.

Chiropractic: Mild Scoliosis Responds to Chiropractic Care.
In this case study, a twelve-year-old girl with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (a double-curve scoliosis that involved a 26° thoracic curve and a 23° lumbar curve) presented for chiropractic care. Following a treatment plan that included chiropractic care three times a week for six months, the girl experienced improvements in mobility and soreness, along with a 23% and 30% reduction in curvature of the thoracic and lumbar spine, respectively. This case highlights the benefits of chiropractic care for early scoliosis primarily because traditional medicine does not offer treatment for mild scoliosis.

Wellness/Prevention: How to Beat Fatigue.
There are several reasons for fatigue such as stress, lack of sleep, and poor diet. To help beat fatigue, the National Institute on Aging recommends the following: exercise regularly, avoid naps of more than 30 minutes, quit smoking, and ask family members and friends for help if you feel overwhelmed.
