Mental Attitude: Those with Depression Often Delay or Avoid Treatment.
Among a large sample of 240,000 Americans with a recent diagnosis for depression, only 36% received treatment within 90 days of their diagnosis. Study author Dr. Beth Waitzfelder writes, “Our study, which was much larger than previous studies, provides important new evidence about the current scope of the problem among leading healthcare systems across the country that are striving to improve depression care in primary care settings… Screening for depression in primary care is a positive step toward improving detection, treatment, and outcome for depression, but disparities persist… We need a better understanding of the patient and other factors that influence treatment initiation.”

Health Alert: Sleepy Drivers May Cause Up to 10% of Accidents.
An analysis of inward facing dash cam footage involving nearly 3,600 drivers taken over the course of several months found that about 10% of motor vehicle collisions occurred when the driver exhibited signs of drowsiness. Researcher Dr. Brian Tefft explains, “Driver drowsiness is a notoriously difficult problem to quantify because it typically doesn’t leave behind evidence that a police officer can observe after the fact when investigating a crash—in contrast to alcohol, for example.”

Diet: Eat More Fruits and Veggies!
According to a study involving 9,749 young Canadian women, low fruit and vegetable intake can increase one’s risk for short or poor sleep.

Exercise: Yoga May Help Manage Metabolic Syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. In a new study, researchers examined the effect of one year of yoga and found that yoga training decreased pro-inflammatory adipokines and increased anti-inflammatory adipokines among participants with metabolic syndrome. Adipokines are signaling proteins that are released by the fat tissue, which tell the immune system to release either an inflammatory or anti-inflammatory response. The study suggests that yoga could be a worthwhile lifestyle intervention to decrease inflammation and help individuals with metabolic syndrome manage their symptoms. Lead researcher Dr. Parco M. Siu adds, “These findings help to reveal the response of adipokines to long-term yoga exercise, which underpins the importance of regular exercise to human health.”

Chiropractic: Forklift Operators Have Higher Risk for Neck Pain.
Swedish researchers report that forklift operators are five times more likely to develop neck pain than office workers. The research team concludes, “This is the first published study showing that forklift operators have an increased risk of neck pain. The results are therefore of significance for improving work schedules, the adjustment of work tasks for these workers and the design of the vehicles.”

Wellness/Prevention: Improve Your Sleep.
Poor sleep quality increases the risk of health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and obesity. The National Institute on Aging offers the following tips to improve your sleep: go to bed and wake up at the same time each day; avoid using cell phones, computers, and televisions in your bedroom; find ways to relax before going to bed; avoid eating big meals, or drinking caffeine or alcohol late in the day; exercise daily, but not right before bedtime; avoid naps of more than 30 minutes during the day, and try to get at least seven hours of sleep per night.
