Mental Attitude: “Cutting” Increases Suicide Risk for Teens.
Young people who are treated for self-inflicted injuries, such as cutting, are nearly 27 times more likely to attempt suicide in the following year. Dr. Lori Evans, assistant professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU Langone Health in New York City notes that families should be aware that there are good, effective therapies out there for those who self-harm.

Diet: Processed and Red Meat Bad for the Liver.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver cells from causes other than excessive alcohol consumption. Exercise: Praise and Technology Help Those with Autism Exercise More.
Past studies have shown that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at greater risk for health challenges such as obesity, depression, and diabetes. In a recent study, researchers explored ways to increase engagement in regular exercise among men and women with ASD and discovered that simple statements of praise such as “Great job running”—whether delivered in person or through a pre-recorded message—had a big effect on the amount of exercise completed by these individuals. The findings should be helpful to parents and clinicians seeking for ways to get those with ASD to get or stay motivated to exercise.

Chiropractic: Neck Pain Common Among Office Workers.
Among a sample of 342 office workers, 103 experienced an episode of neck pain during the course of one year. Of those who developed neck pain, half did not experience a resolution of their symptoms within 60 days. Past research has demonstrated that the combination of specific exercises and chiropractic adjustments is an effective form of treatment for patients suffering from neck pain.

Wellness/Prevention: Smartwatch App Could Help Detect Common Heart Problem.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disturbance in the world and a leading cause of blood clots and stroke. Currently, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco are testing an app that can work in conjunction with smartwatch technology to detect atrial fibrillation, possibly as accurately as an electrocardiogram performed in a clinical setting. The researchers hope this app can help individuals discover if they have developed this dangerous heart rhythm irregularity much earlier in the course of the disease when treatment may be more effective.
