Mental Attitude: Friendship Can Reduce Mental Decline in Seniors.
In this study, Northwestern University researchers observed that older adults who remained mentally sharp well into their 80s and 90s, so called “superagers”, tended to maintain more and longer-lasting friendships than the general geriatric population. The findings suggest that social activities, such as visiting friends and volunteering, can be beneficial to helping seniors maintain their brain health as they age.

Health Alert: Binge Drinking Widespread in America.
Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks for men or four or more drinks for women in about two hours. This behavior can lead to dangerous driving, unsafe sex, and violent behavior. A new study notes that in 2015, 37 million adults in the United States binge drank on at least one occasion. The findings are concerning because each year, binge drinking accounts for more than 50% of the 88,000 alcohol-related deaths and 75% of the $249 billion in economic costs associated with excessive drinking.

Diet: Seasoned Veggies Preferred By High School Students.
A survey of 100 students found that they preferred their vegetables seasoned with herbs and spices over oil or salt. This suggests that schools should consider adding spices to vegetables to improve vegetable consumption and help reduce food waste.

Exercise: Preemies’ Hearts Less Able to Cope with Exercise Later in Life.
The hearts of individuals born prematurely appear less able to handle the demands of exercise in adulthood. In this study, researchers compared the heart function of 47 adults who were born premature and 54 who were born full term and found the hearts of those born early had a reduced capacity to pump blood during exercise even though the hearts of both groups performed the same at rest. The findings may explain why preemies are more likely to develop heart failure later in life.

Chiropractic: Exercise Plus Manipulation Effective for Shoulder Pain.
In a study involving 40 patients with subacromial pain (shoulder pain), those who received thoracic manipulation in addition to exercise therapy experienced greater improvements in pain and function than those who only engaged in an exercise therapy program. Doctors of chiropractic are known to take this approach when treating patients with subacromial pain.

Wellness/Prevention: Vitamin D May Help Diabetics Manage Blood Sugar Levels.
Among a group of type 2 diabetics with deficient vitamin D levels, researchers found that improving vitamin D serum levels via supplementation improved the subjects’ ability to control their blood glucose levels.
