Diet: Mediterranean Diet May Benefit Osteoporosis Patients.
The Mediterranean diet focuses on fruits and vegetables, grains, olive oil, fish, lean meats, and nuts/seeds. In this study, researchers identified an association between greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet and less bone loss in the hip among women with osteoporosis.

Researchers tested cardiovascular fitness, body composition, and gut composition of 20 men and 17 women and found that those with the best cardiovascular fitness had a healthier balance of good vs. bad bacteria in their digestive system.

Chiropractic: Back Pain Is a Common Problem for Hospital Staff.
According to a new study that looked at employee absenteeism in a European hospital, musculoskeletal disorders are the main reason for sick leave among hospital staff. In particular, the researchers found that low back pain was the predominate reason for absence from work among nurses, midwives, and other hospital employees between 20 to 45 years of age. The study suggests that promoting measures to manage ergonomic risk factors that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders could help reduce health-related absenteeism in a hospital setting.

Due to its ability to insulate and prevent the spread of fire, asbestos fiber was commonly used in construction materials in the first half of the 20th century. However, exposure to asbestos fibers released into the air during demolition or remodeling is known to increase an individual’s risk for lung disease. The Environmental Protection Agency offers the following advice for dealing with asbestos: leave undamaged asbestos alone; limit children’s access to any materials that may contain asbestos; have removal or repairs performed by individuals trained in handling asbestos; don’t dust, sweep, or vacuum debris that may contain asbestos; don’t saw, sand, scrape, or drill holes in asbestos; don’t use abrasive materials to strip wax from asbestos flooring; don’t sand or remove asbestos flooring; and don’t track material that contains asbestos through the house.
