Mental Attitude: Caregivers of Dementia Patients May Have Higher Stroke Risk. 
Korean researchers report that individuals who care for a spouse with dementia may have an increased risk for stroke. Using data from the 2012 and 2013 Korea Community Health Survey, the research team found that caring for a partner with dementia increases the caregiver’s risk for stoke by about 70%. They conclude, “Spouses of individuals with dementia should be closely monitored and educated for risk factors of stroke.”

Health Alert: Road Traffic Noise and Pollution May Increase Heart Failure Risk. 
Using data concerning 57,053 middle-aged and older adults collected over a thirteen-year period, Danish researchers report that individuals living in areas with greater exposure to automobile-related traffic noise and air pollution have a 7-8% greater risk for heart failure than those living further from main roads.

Diet: Take a Break? 
In a study involving 36 obese adults, researchers asked half of the participants to maintain a calorie-restricted diet for two weeks, then stop dieting and simply eat to keep their weight stable, and repeat this cycle for 30 weeks to ensure they completed 16 total weeks of dieting. The rest of the individuals in the study simply consumed the same restricted-calorie diet for 16 consecutive weeks. While both groups lost weight, those in the intermittent diet group shed significantly more pounds than those in the continuous diet group. Study leader Dr. Nuala Byrne writes, “While further investigations are needed around this intermittent dieting approach, findings from this study provide preliminary support for the model as a superior alternative to continuous dieting for weight loss.”

Exercise: Mix it Up. 
Adopting a fitness routine that involves various type of exercise may lead to better results. In this study, researchers found that participants who utilized resistance exercise, cardio workouts, interval training, and stretching lost more weight, shed more belly fat, and gained more lean muscle mass than those who engaged in just one form of exercise.

Chiropractic: Physical Activity and Spinal Pain in Kids. 
During a 19-month study, parents provided weekly updates on their child’s spinal pain status while accelerometers tracked each boy’s and girl’s physical activity levels. Of the 1,205 kids involved in the study, 31% reported spinal pain during this time, of which 14% sought treatment. The data show that the children who regularly engaged in moderate intensity physical activity were about 16% less likely than less active participants to experience spinal pain. On the other hand, those with more vigorous physical activity levels had a slightly elevated risk for developing spinal pain.
