It can be difficult for college students to get enough sleep due to late night studying and other distractions, and lack of sleep can affect both physical and mental well-being. Dr. Aneesa Das, assistant director of the sleep medicine program at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center explains, “A bad night’s sleep or chronically not getting enough sleep can affect every aspect of our lives… It can affect how we perform in school, our immunity, and our emotions. When we’re tired, we’re more prone to infections, more likely to get into arguments and less likely to participate in activities we enjoy.” Dr. Das recommends that if college students can’t avoid an all-nighter studying for exams, they should get a good night’s sleep both before and after. Ohio State University, August 2016 Health Alert: Children Often Injured in Strollers & Infant Carriers. A new study finds that two children in the United States are injured in stroller- and child carrier-related accidents every hour. The study also found that the most common cause of injury was falling, which accounted for 67% of stroller injuries and 63% of carrier injuries, while tipping over accounted for about 29% of carrier injuries and 16% of stroller injuries. Study author Dr. Kristi Roberts adds, “While these products are used safely by families every day, when injuries do occur they can be quite serious… By taking a few simple steps—like making sure your child is buckled up every time he is in his stroller or carrier—and being aware of things that can cause these products to tip over, [you] can help prevent many of these injuries.” Academic Pediatrics, August 2016 Diet: Swap a Sugar Sweetened Drink for Water to Reduce Weight Gain. Currently, nearly 35% of American adults are obese, which increases their risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. In this study, researchers found that adults who swapped a single eight-ounce sugary beverage for an eight-ounce serving of water decreased their total percentage of calories from such drinks by a third. Based on the findings, the researchers estimate that totally switching from sugary drinks to water could decreased the prevalence of obesity in America by about 34%. Nutrients, June 2016 Exercise: Exercise Along with a Healthy Diet May Reduce Alzheimer’s Disease Risk. Investigators studied 44 patients who had mild memory problems and found that those who followed a Mediterranean-style diet and were physically active had less plaques and tangles in their brains than the patients who ate more unhealthy foods and were less physically active. The formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are believed to contribute to the degradation of nerve cells in the brain and the subsequent symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The study is the first to show how lifestyle factors can influence levels of the abnormal protein deposits in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease. American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, August 2016 Chiropractic: Hand Syndromes More Common in Diabetics. A cross-sectional study involving diabetics and non-diabetics revealed that men and women with diabetes have a higher prevalence for common musculoskeletal conditions of the hands including carpal tunnel syndrome, stenosing flexor tenosynovitis, limited joint mobility, and Dupuytren’s Disease. The findings suggest that reducing the rate of diabetes could also reduce the incidence of the above musculoskeletal conditions. Journal of Diabetes, August 2016 Wellness/Prevention: Help Prevent Cavities By Sealing Teeth. Dental health experts say that coating your kid’s molars with a dental sealant can help prevent up to 80% of cavities formed during childhood. According to the American Dental Association, dental sealants can supplement regular brushing and flossing to protect against the bacteria that feed on food particles and create the acids that produce holes in the teeth.
